How to determine whether symptoms are caused by physical or psychological factors
How to apply your evaluation to rule out physical dysfunction and identify stress and emotional factors in chronic pain
How to actively reduce fear while you educate and treat your clients with your manual therapy and exercise skills
How to teach pain re-processing strategies like somatic tracking to change the brain's neural pathways
How to support your clients in processing emotions and creating meaningful life change
Integrate these strategies into your manual therapy and movement practices
This live virtual course is designed to help you change your paradigm and learn how to use your current skills in a new way to help cure people of acute and chronic symptoms.
You'll learn how to then synthesize modern pain science and therapeutic alliance skills with novel psychological strategies that are fully accessible to a range of clinicians.
Please bring a personal case example or one from your clinic to share. We'll have plenty of Clinical Skill practice, Case Examples, and Troubleshooting of attendee cases in groups during the course.
Pre Reading
If you haven't already done so, please familiarize yourself with the books "Explain Pain" by the NOI group and "Unlearn Your Pain" by Howard Schubiner before the course.
BONUS: Post Training Mentoring
Included in the cost of training, you'll have an opportunity to meet with Charlie Merrill on a monthly hour long group consult call for 6 sessions total after the training. These consults are ongoing and you may continue to join the consult group thereafter for a small monthly fee. As PTs and other therapists, we're used to the old "train and hope" model where we learn for a weekend and then assume we'll retain everything and be able to apply it well. We feel consult after any training is critical for all attendees. Implementation science shows that a clinicians ability to apply any model of treatment well depends on consult over time. This work is novel and unique and so requires some ongoing learning and mentoring to really do well. We think you'll find this opportunity very rich and rewarding.
Charlie Merrill is the owner of Merrill Performance in Boulder, CO where he's practiced, mentored, and taught manual therapy for 20 years. In his practice, Charlie uses a mind-body approach to treat a wide range of clients including some of the best runners, cyclists, rock climbers, and CrossFitters in the world. He’s a content creator appearing on Podcasts, his channel on YouTube and is active on social media supporting people in pain. He consults in the technology space for companies that develop products for pain and health/wellness. Charlie also consults for shoe companies about minimalist footwear and has invented and prototyped mobility tools with Rogue Fitness.
Howard Schubiner, MD, is director of the Mind Body Medicine Program at Providence Hospital in Southfield, Michigan, and a clinical professor at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. He is the author of “Unlearn Your Pain” and “Unlearn Your Anxiety” and Depression, and the newest book for clinicians, “Hidden from View”, co-authored with Allan Abbass, MD. Howard is the star of the documentary film “This Might Hurt” based on his work. He was the medical director for the recently submitted for publishing CU chronic low back pain study. Howard is a clinician, researcher, author, consultant, app developer, and movie star. He understands this work for multiple angles and is one of a few physicians who is pioneering a new future for health and medicine.
"I’ve taken Howard and Charlie’s course twice. It awakened the part in me that always wanted to be excited about going to work everyday. Most of my patients have persistent symptoms of one variety or another. Since the class, I feel I am truly helping many of these patients get to the real “root” of their pain. One of the many great parts of the course is actually when it’s over! Why? Howard and Charlie truly want you to contact them if you ever have a question. Charlie also offers a monthly zoom group consultation for anyone who’d like to participate. I can’t thank them enough for their generosity and honesty!"
- Joe Belanger, DPT
"Taking this course with Charlie and Howard not only changed my interaction with every single patient, but also with myself. This course helped me get over a personal pain hump from years of chronic pain and empowered me with actionable tools to guide others to do the same. I truly believe the information in this course is vital to treating your patients with the best, most effective care possible. I wish my PTs, doctors, acupuncturists, and every other healthcare provider from my past had taken this course. It would have saved me from … well … a lot of pain!"
- Tara Dirocco, DPT Student
"Beyond Pain is a must for any practitioner looking to move deeper into pain science. The course helps identify patients who will respond to new evidence based therapies that are not what is traditionally thought or taught. This course helped me connect on a deeper level with myself and my patient population."
- Daniel C Brown, PT, DPT, COMT, OCS
